The increased demand for this service has led to a number of serious challenges to the project which might threaten its future. They are :
The project has currently 18 well-trained and experienced counsellors and 3 Counselling Managers who are divided into three groups each working an 8 hour shift to cover the 14 hours per day.
This leaves the counsellors extremely exhausted and not effectively dealing with some of the calls. To effectively and adequately deal with the current volumes of calls, we need to increase the number of counsellors to at least 30.
There is going to be more demand for the service in the coming years as more and more people get retrenched from their jobs and the rate of HIV infection and women abuse continues to increase. The increase of staff also means that we will need to increase our spending on training and development as well as on administration.
Salaries for counsellors, the telephone bill and training and development are some of the major expenses of the project. We are currently jointly funded by the Social Welfare and Justice Departments, unfortunately these funds do not meet all our costs for this project.
