Some Recent
Findings are that...
- The
majority of callers are single women who live with partner whom
they are not legally married to.
- Many
women phone that their partners come from other countries.
These partners often abandon them and their children and leave the
women to fend for themselves. Sometimes they marry them to obtain SA
citizenship before abandoning them.
- More
male callers call about child abuse. These
callers are men who see children being abused in the community and then call
the line to report the incident. The
counsellor will refer them to the nearest CPU or social worker.
- Both men and women phoning about child abuse are concerned citizens
or relatives of abused children.
- Three
forms of abuse are reported. These
often are connected, although men often report emotional abuse only.
Women often phone about emotional abuse and then through counselling
disclose economic and physical abuse as well.
- Calls
about femicide are often from women who are being physically abused and fear
being murdered by their male partner. They often phone after they have been abused and suffer
from serious injuries.
